Which AI Tool Removes Backgrounds Best?

In the rapidly evolving world of AI, art tools are transforming the creative process, and one feature stands out in particular — background removal. Whether you’re a designer, marketer, or casual creator, removing backgrounds with precision and ease has become a game-changer. In this showdown, I’ll dive into three AI-powered background removal tools, comparing their accuracy, speed, and user-friendliness to help you find the best fit for your needs.

(1) ArtSpace.ai

Let’s start with my favorite AI art tool, ArtSpace.ai, which offers a 1-click background remover.

(a) Generate an Image from a Prompt

To test this feature, I need to first generate an image. Using the upper-right toolbar, I select the Nova 2024 Flux art model, known to be the tool’s most advanced version to date.

Next, I create a prompt to generate an image, specifically choosing one with a subject against a plain background, along with a few objects. This setup provides the perfect scenario to test how well the background removal function performs.

This is my prompt:

Create a vibrant, Pixar-style image featuring a cheerful male clown in a colorful, detailed clown costume, facing the camera. The clown should be the central focus, with one hand stretched out in a friendly wave. Surround the scene with dynamic confetti falling mid-air, but ensure the background remains simple and flat gray, emphasising the clown’s joyful expression and playful interaction.

Here’s the result.

Do note that you can also upload your own image by using the blue ‘Upload’ button in the upper left corner of the dashboard.

(b) Use the ‘Magic Wand’ to Remove the Background

Now is the time to use the background remover. Click on the clown image above to select it, and then click on the Magic Wand in the upper right corner and select ‘Remove Background’ from the drop-down menu.

(2) Adobe Free Background Remover

Next, I’ll be using Adobe’s free background remover on the same image.

I’ve intentionally placed both images on black backgrounds for easier comparison. Now, take a close look at each image. On the right, you’ll notice that Adobe’s result still leaves a faint white border around the clown in some spots, and it also removes all of the confetti. Can you spot the differences? 😊

(3) Remove.bg

Let me try another background remover, Remove.bg, which is one of the most popular tools online. Now, compare the two images again. Remove.bg performed better than Adobe, as it didn’t leave any white border around the clown. However, like Adobe, it also removed all the confetti from the background.

Using a Photo from a Stock Photo Platform

In case you are thinking that the result is not being fair to Adobe or remove.bg because the initial image was generated from ArtSpace.ai, let’s use a new image taken from a stock photo platform, such as Pexels. For example, let’s try to use this image below.

Here are the results:

Both Adobe and Remove.bg removed a feature near the bottom right leg, but I did notice that ArtSpace.ai failed to eliminate a small black patch behind the man’s head.

This time, neither Adobe nor Remove.bg left any faint white borders around their images. However, both tools seemed to ‘slice’ the image too deeply, making the figure appear thinner than in the original. You can see this clearly by comparing the size of the right hand. It’s also worth noting that with Remove.bg, the free version only allows you to download a low-resolution image.

In conclusion, ArtSpace.ai outperforms Adobe and Remove.bg for this specific task, but it might not always be the best choice for every situation. For instance, Remove.bg excels when dealing with intricate details like hair, though it comes at a higher cost. Ultimately, having multiple options is a great advantage, especially when tools like ArtSpace.ai’s 1-click background remover make the process so effortless.
